A content marketing strategy is more important for businesses now than ever before. But, why is this I hear you ask?
Well, according to Content Marketing Institute, 70% of B2B marketers are creating more content now than ever before. We’ve listed our top tips to begin creating your content marketing strategy.
Why does a content marketing strategy matter for business?
A content marketing strategy can help you generate new leads, monitor your traffic and most importantly, bring in sales. Anything from writing an optimised blog post that gets shared on social media, to creating an e-book that is downloaded multiple times. There is no denying that content is king when it comes to marketing your business.
Here are some beginner’s steps to get you on your way to creating a fabulous content marketing strategy.
Define your audience
Before you begin putting pen to paper (or finger to keyboard), you need to define who your audience or target customer is. They will be the followers who will be reading you content religiously. You may already know who your customer is and if so, that’s great. But bear in mind that your target audience may have developed or changed over time. If you’re new to marketing, however, and are writing a content marketing strategy for the first time, you need to define a customer persona. Who are you selling to? Who is going to engage with your content? Who is your customer?
Define your content
There are numerous ways to produce content for your business. In your content marketing strategy, define which content you want to focus on, such as: blogs, e-books, social media content, infographics, podcasts, videos and so on. Make sure whichever format you choose, you create good quality content and not just create content for the sake of it. The more high quality your content is, the more you will be able to recycle the content over again. It is then more likely that this content will be shared.
Test your content
When developing a content marketing strategy, it can be easy to dive straight in, generate hundreds of pieces of content, create random social media posts or launch into an e-book without putting much thought behind why you are writing and who you are writing for. Start off small and test your content and measure your results. What are your audience responding to? What’s relevant? What subjects are your audience engaging with most? Much like your target audience, your content marketing strategy will also evolve, so you need to be able to adapt and change your content quickly.
Manage your content
Once you have defined what has worked within your content marketing strategy, you need to keep on top if it. Look at tools which can help you analyse your content marketing strategy to see what’s working and what’s not.
With your blog, monitor your traffic and see how many reads, likes and shares your posts are getting. There are social media tools such as Buffer and Hootsuite which can also monitor your reach, your following and which posts that your audience are engaged with (to name a few!).
Be aware that your content marketing strategy isn’t something that is implemented overnight; it’s a long-term strategy. However, with clearly defined goals, you will be able to right an achievable content marketing strategy that will work for you business. Good luck!
